FibroScan

Needle-free, painless advanced technology measurement of fatty liver and stiffness (fibrosis).

FibroScan

FibroScan measures liver stiffness and steatosis without biopsy in a rapid and painless way.

FibroScan (Transient Elastography) is a groundbreaking, completely safe, and painless imaging technology used in the diagnosis and follow-up of liver diseases that does not involve radiation or needles. Going beyond traditional ultrasonography, it allows us to measure structural deterioration (fibrosis/stiffening) and fat accumulation (steatosis) in the liver quantitatively, that is, with clear numerical data. In our clinic, it is used as a routine part of liver health evaluations.

Liver biopsy has long been considered the gold standard in determining liver damage. However, biopsy is an invasive procedure that requires taking a tissue sample from the liver with a needle, can be painful, may require a hospital stay, and carries risks such as a slight bleeding tendency. FibroScan, on the other hand, scans a large area of the liver in seconds, offering results of equivalent reliability to biopsy and saving the patient from this challenging process.

Especially in cases of 'Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease', which has reached epidemic proportions today, the fat measurement parameter (CAP) provided by FibroScan is the most objective tool to determine the severity of the disease. In addition, in chronic viral infections such as Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C or alcohol-related liver diseases, it detects with millimetric precision at what stage the risk of cirrhosis is, and whether the liver has begun to lose its elasticity and stiffen.

The procedure is performed in an examination room and is very similar to an ultrasonography. The propagation speed of sound waves sent between the ribs in the liver tissue is measured; the stiffer the tissue, the faster the waves are transmitted. During this comfortable evaluation, which takes only 10-15 minutes, the patient feels absolutely nothing. The result report, generated instantly when the measurement is complete, is shared with the patient by the physician on the spot, and the treatment strategy is determined without delay.

The objective and reproducible data provided by the FibroScan device offers a great advantage in monitoring success in the treatment of diseases. After diet, exercise, or drug treatments we prescribe, seeing the fat in the liver decrease and how much the tissue has healed with concrete numbers in follow-up measurements every 6 months or annually is a strong source of motivation for our patients.
